How We Test
We don't just click around software — we run it. Every tool we review is tested in a real small business environment with actual transactions, real employees, and genuine customer interactions.
Scoring Criteria
Every product receives a score from 0 to 10 based on weighted criteria. Here is exactly how we calculate it.
Ease of Use
We time how long it takes a non-technical user to complete core tasks. Onboarding friction, UI clarity, and documentation quality all count.
Features
We test every feature that matters for small businesses: invoicing, reporting, integrations, mobile access, and multi-user support.
Value
We compare total cost of ownership including per-user fees, transaction fees, add-on costs, and contract lock-in. We flag hidden price increases.
Support & Reliability
We test support responsiveness, measure uptime, and evaluate data export options. Can you leave easily if the tool doesn't work out?
Tools & Equipment
The tools we use to produce consistent, reproducible results.
- Test business environments with real transaction data
- User task-completion timing framework
- Integration testing with 20+ common business tools
- Mobile usability testing on iOS and Android
- Support response measurement (chat, email, phone)
Independence Pledge
- No sponsored rankings. Our scores are never influenced by advertising or affiliate relationships.
- We buy everything ourselves. Products are purchased at retail price with our own funds. No vendor-supplied review units.
- Affiliate transparency. We earn commissions from some links. This funds our testing but never affects our scores. Full disclosure.
- Corrections policy. If we get something wrong, we update the article with a visible correction notice and date.
Update Cadence
Reviews are updated quarterly or when major pricing changes occur. Feature updates are noted within 2 weeks of release.
Every article shows its publish date and last update date. If a review is more than 6 months old without an update, we flag it as potentially outdated.
